E-mail to SMS gateways are helpful in providing SMS alerts of e-mail on a cell phone. Since the alerts are received via SMS, the phone need not be GPRS enabled. Its helpful in providing alerts regarding important mails (like business mails) even when the person is travelling. The message does not contain the mail itself, just the sender’s ID. But the method is useful nonetheless, for example in phones without GPRS.

For users not covered by the networks above:
There is a second method. There are some gateway service providers like 160by2,way2sms etc). Now in India there is a gateway service available at way2sms.com (other users need to search for a similar service themselves).
1.Register at way2sms.com by providing the recipient mobile no. and an e-mail ID.
2.Create a way2sms e-mail account of the form ’10digitmobileno@way2sms.com’.
3.Click on the mail alerts tab to activate mail alerts and set preferences.
An example is shown below:
Create A Mail Filter
Now , for a G-mail ID ( I have not tried with the other IDs) open the G-mail account and create a filter for the ID for which alerts are needed (the create filter link is at the top) .
Create new filter and enter the email address for which you want to receive SMS alert.
In the next step, setup a Forward rule to your free email-to-sms number.
The forwarding address will be any 1 of the sms gateway addresses.
For eg: for a T-mobile no. it will be: ‘number@tmomail.net’. Or it can be the way2sms ID ‘number@way2sms.com ‘ .
Now everytime a mail is received from the above mentioned ID, an sms alert will be received.
